Ohio Builds a Nation
The Washington County Historical Society has a really nice research library at the Archives on Muskingum Drive. You can come in and study from books on local and regional history, genealogy, local military history, family histories and many others.
One book that caught my eye recently is “Ohio Builds a Nation”, by Samuel Harden Stille, 1939. This small hardbound book is filled with short article on some part of Ohio History and several of these stories are about Washington County. Each entry is headed by a really nice pen and ink drawing related to the article. One such article is “An Old Muskingum Tavern”, about the Davis Tavern. The article appears here:
I do not know if the Davis Tavern building still stands today. Is Muskingum River Highway number 77 now route 60, or River Road? Does the Stacey Family still own the property? This looks to me like a nice topic to visit the Archives and dig into some chilly fall day soon.
The Archives are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-2.
